Professor Dr. Syed Mohammad Shahed is a retired Professor of Bangla Department of University of Dhaka, and former Director General of Bangla Academy. At present, he is the Vice-Chancellor of Tagore University of Creative Arts.
After obtaining a PhD degree from Dhaka University, Dr. Shahed was a visiting fellow at Nagoya University, Japan. In 2018, he won the Jibanananda-Bhumendra Guha Award for his book ‘Natun Charyapad’. In 2019, he received the Bangla Academy Literary Award for research.
His research publications include History of Modern Bengali Rhymes), Life of Ramesh Sheel), Bengali Society & Culture Reflected in Rhymes), Comparative Study in Oral Tradition, Life and Works of Fani Barua, Aesthetics of Gandhi, Discussion on African Poems, Life of Ranesh Dasgupta, New Verses of Charyapada, Life of Santosh Gupta, An English Soldier’s Diary of Plassey, Fairy, Beggars Songs of Dhaka City etc.
Dr. Shahed served as a Secretary of Central Khelaghar Ashar, Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Council of Child Welfare, Secretary General of UN Association of Bangladesh, Vice President of World Federation of UNAs, Founding Executive Committee Member of Bangabandhu Parishad Central Committee, Member of Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO and Trustee of Bangladesh National Museum.
He Participated in a number of seminars & symposia in India, Nepal, Malaysia, China, Singapore, Hongkong, Soviet Union, France, England, Spain, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, United States of America, Canada, Argentina, Dominican Republic etc.
